RIVER CRUISING / FIREFLY WATCHING

The rivers of Donsol, believed to contribute nourishment to planktonic food of whale sharks, host to a number of mangrove and mangrove-associated species and freshwater fishes. Immediately before sunset, river cruising allows tourists to watch and interact with fishers using various gears such as “bintol’, ‘pangilaw’ and ‘sudsod’. Sudsod fishers are often seen aggregating at the river mouth, waist-deep, catching crustaceans. The fishers wear kerosene lamps over their heads, secured by improvised hats, to aid them during night fishing.

Firefly watching at Ogod or Donsol River is a visual and spiritual way to experience nature. Hundreds of these nocturnal insects inhabit the two rivers and provide glow around the mangrove-associated stands along the banks. Firefly watching is becoming an important nature-based destination in Donsol. Only three countries, including the Philippines, in Asia offer this kind of firefly tour.

Paddle boats and motorized boats are available for a tranquil ride along the stretch of these rivers.
